A few weeks ago, I found myself heads up for my first Eagle trophy on Global Poker. 20bbs effective, I was dealt T2o on the BTN/SB.
I found this hand particularly interesting because of range/nut hand dynamics on the run out: I had all the nut hands while my opponent had few.
When poker players make statements like this, “I have all the nut combos,” what does that mean? It’s a way of talking about what likely range of hands our opponent has and that we have, as well as how they interact together with the board. Often players are referring to GTO preflop ranges when they say “we have/they have,” but it can also refer to adjustments that we make in guessing how our opponent constructs their range based on prior information. For example, if I player is raising more often than theory would suggest, we might think about what hands they are playing in a particular spot that others wouldn’t.
This was a hand that I in which I chose to make some significant deviations from what I thought would be a “standard” GTO strategy. But I wasn’t sure if my in-game thinking was solid, so I marked the hand to investigate later. This video shares the results of that review.
I won’t spoil the results just yet, but yes, I did win the title, the trophy, and 170x my buyin in this $11r!
This is the first in a series of short videos I intend to release on a regular basis. I hope you enjoy and learn from it!
